Elmo, one of the most popular characters ever, makes his appearance in this electronic reader from Nokia called Storyplay. Much more than an electronic reading device, it is designed to let kids have their bedtime stories with their parents, granpas or anyone wishing to read along with them even if they’re far apart. Place a real paper book in the middle of the device (with magnets on each page to identify what is being shown), then watch the two screens on the top: one is the footage of Sesame Street characters, the other shows the floating head that’s reading along with the kid. A alternative to Kindle that looks like a creative and entertaining learning tool.

Books come to life with Disney. Disney Digital Books, the service that allows kids and parents to access an online library with more than 500 Disney titles, has been launched yesterday. Kids will meet their favorite characters on colorful, highly interactive books featuring Mickey Mouse, the Disney Princesses, Pirates of the Caribbean, Hannah Montana and many more.
Disney Digital Books are different from traditional e-books; in fact, they can’t be converted to readers such as Kindle, but they are appealing to young readers as they also have a “read aloud” feature that lets kids hear the stories being read, an interactive dictionary and reading certificates for the most passionate readers.
Disney’s goal is to draw digital natives into reading thanks to the interactivity of the web. Disney Digital Books is a subscription-based service: you can opt either for a month-to-month subscription of $8.95 or an annual subscription of $79.95.
